The Butler soccer team had a successful night at the opening of the BG Products Veterans Sports Complex in front of a record crowd. The Grizzlies defeated the Red Devils in a Jayhawk Conference game 11-0.
Ranked fourth in the NSCAA preseason poll, Butler scored four goals in the first half taking the lead. Dominating the field was forwarder Alyssa Miller with the first goal assisted by midfielder Megan Snyder. Forwarder Abby Ponce scored two goals, one assisted by midfielder Mari Ruvalcaba. Shooting for another goal was midfielder Alyssia Salinas with one unassisted goal.
The Grizzlies increased the score in the second half as Miller went in for another two goals, one assisted by midfielder Lamya Scott. Aisling Dyer converted a penalty kick into a goal. Midfielder Simone Arthur assisted midfielder Laura Falkenstien in another goal for Butler.
Taking the ball under her feet for another goal was Ruvalcaba assisted by forward Hannah Palomo. Next to score was Morgan Foster assisted by Megan Snyder. Snyder scored the final goal.
The Grizzlies will step back out of conference play for a long road trip on Sunday to Cheyenne, Wyo. to play Laramie County, which is the team Butler defeated via penalty kicks last November to qualify for the NJCAA National Tournament.
