Butler Dominates Colby to Secure No. 1 Seed and 29th Win on Sophomore Night

Butler (29-1, 23-1 KJCCC) placed four players in double figures and clinched the No. 1 overall seed in the Region 6 Tournament, securing their first KJCCC regular-season title since 2021. With an opening‑round bye, the Grizzlies will face the winner of Saturday's matchup between No. 8 Garden City and No. 9 Cowley on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. inside the Power Plant.
Colby finished the regular season 15-15 overall and 12-12 in conference play, earning the No. 6 seed in the Region 6 bracket.
The Trojans pushed Butler early, erasing a 10‑point deficit and using a 21–11 second‑quarter surge to tie the game at 31 heading into halftime. Colby shot 56.3 percent in the period, while the Grizzlies managed just 41.7 percent.
Butler responded with force in the third quarter, opening on a 14–2 run to take a 45–33 lead. The Grizzlies outscored Colby 25–11 in the frame and controlled the rest of the night, holding the Trojans to just nine made field goals in the second half.
The Grizzlies shot 48.3 percent from the floor and went 16–22 at the free‑throw line. Their dominance on the boards proved decisive, outrebounding Colby 48–24 and converting 18 offensive rebounds into 21 second‑chance points.
Ashley Singhateh led Butler with 17 points, five rebounds, six assists, and two steals. Keegan Yarick recorded her fourth double‑double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Destiny Smith added 13 points, and Kenzie Galliart chipped in 11 points and six boards.
The 29–1 start matches the best under head coach Mike Helmer, who also opened 29–1 during the 2013–14 campaign before falling in the Region 6 Championship.
Next up: Butler hosts either Garden City or Cowley on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Region 6 Quarterfinal — the final home game for head coach Mike Helmer in the Power Plant.
