HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Sophomore Mya Mayberry delivered a career‑best performance with 36 points as No. 8 Butler (19‑1, 13‑1) completed a season sweep of No. 18 Hutchinson (15‑5, 10‑4) with a 56‑52 road win Monday night at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. The victory also marked head coach Mike Helmer's third career win in the building, adding to wins in 2017‑18 (57‑54) and 2022‑23 (73‑67).
Mayberry was unstoppable, scoring 22 points in the second half and 16 in a dominant third quarter alone. She finished 12 of 19 from the field and an impressive 8 of 11 from beyond the arc, accounting for more than half of Butler's made baskets.
The Grizzlies fell behind by eight in the opening quarter before trimming the deficit to 18‑12 after a late bucket from Aliyah Green. Butler entered halftime trailing 29‑26.
The third quarter belonged entirely to Mayberry. She knocked down three three‑pointers before the first media timeout to give Butler a 39‑34 lead, then added another triple to push the margin to 42‑37. The Grizzlies carried a 48‑42 advantage into the fourth.
Both teams tightened defensively in the final period. Butler managed just eight points while Hutchinson scored 10, but the Grizzlies held on. Leading 54‑52 with 1:36 remaining, Butler survived an open Hutchinson three‑point attempt that hit off the rim. After a missed Butler shot, the Blue Dragons secured the rebound and called timeout with 24 seconds left. On the ensuing possession, Hutchinson turned the ball over with 14 seconds remaining and was forced to foul. Destiny Smith calmly sank both free throws to seal the 56‑52 win.
Butler shot 35.8% from the field (19‑53) and went 9 of 21 from three. Hutchinson shot 20 of 57 and outrebounded the Grizzlies 39‑29.
The sweep is Butler's second over Hutchinson under Helmer, with the first coming in the 2022-23 season.
The Grizzlies remain tied atop the conference standings with No. 3 Dodge City.
Next up: Butler returns home to the Power Plant on Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. matchup with the Pratt Beavers.
