Smith’s Eight Threes Power Grizzlies Past Cowley

EL DORADO, Kan. – The No. 14 Butler Grizzlies picked up another conference win on Wednesday night, defeating the Cowley Tigers 64–54.
The Grizzlies (14-1, 8-1) used a dominant third quarter to pull away from Cowley (8-7, 4-5) in their first home game of the new year.
Butler led 19–9 after the first quarter, but Cowley responded by outscoring the Grizzlies 18–12 in the second to trim the halftime margin to 31–27. Cowley shot 8-for-14 from the field in the quarter, while Butler went 4-for-14.
The Grizzlies took control in the third, outscoring Cowley 17–6. The Tigers shot just 3-for-15 in the period and 0-for-4 from three. Butler went 6-for-16, with Ashley Singhateh and Destiny Smith combining for 12 of the team's 17 points.
Early in the fourth, Butler stretched its lead to a game‑high 22 points, going up 59–37 with seven minutes remaining. Smith caught fire in the final frame, scoring 12 points and hitting four of her five three‑point attempts. Cowley cut the deficit to 11 late, but the Grizzlies held on for the 64–54 win.
Butler's defense limited Cowley to 37.9 percent shooting, including 5-for-22 from three. The Grizzlies shot 43.6 percent from the field and 11-for-30 from deep. They also tallied an impressive 21 assists on 24 made baskets and outrebounded Cowley 33–25.
Smith led all scorers with 24 points on 8-for-17 shooting—all eight of her makes coming from beyond the arc. Singhateh was the only other Grizzly in double figures, finishing with 10 points, six rebounds, and two assists.
