No. 6 Butler takes down No. 17 Hutchinson in 3-0 shutout victory
Story by: Wyatt Ebersole
It was all Grizzlies in this installment of the historic Hutch-Butler soccer rivalry. The Grizzlies scored three goals in the first 22 minutes of action and never looked back.
The win improves the Grizzlies to 11-2-1 on the year, 7-0-1 in KJCCC play, and 6-2-1 against opponents ranked in the NJCAA Top 20.
Grizzly Head Coach Adam Hunter said of the game, "We created a lot of chances tonight. The girls had a really good energy all game. They showed up and looked locked into the game from the start."
Butler got things started with a goal in the 7th minute of play when sophomore Yossi Villagrana slid a ball into the box and freshman Brooke Sullivan punched it into the Hutch net, Brooke's first of two goals on the day. Just two minutes later, Butler would double their lead when Emma Kolbe hit paydirt by knocking in a ball that came right to her off the hands of the Hutch keeper. Sullivan drove her goal total on the year to nine when she found the back of the net on a sweet feed from midfielder Amelie Koenig.
Coach Hunter said this of Sullivan's performance: "You know I said to Brooke personally before the game tonight that it's nights like tonight why you chose to come Butler and help us, so go do your thing. Make an impact."
Sullivan did just that, scoring two goals in fifteen minutes.
Butler played fantastic defense all evening. Stifling many of the Hutchinson attacks. The Blue Dragons' best chance to score came in the 42nd minute off a corner kick that was destined for the back of the net, but defender Maria Amor stepped in front of the shot to earn a defensive save.
Kyrah Klumpp and the back line had another impressive performance keeping the Grizzly goal empty for the fifth time this season and the third time in the last four games.
"Kyrah didn't get tremendously tested tonight which is a testament to the players in front of her. Madi Bowman had a great game back there for us, but when Kyrah needed to be there and make a play; she was there," said Coach Hunter.
The schedule for the Grizzlies stays tough as they travel to Kansas City Kansas to take on the KCK Blue Devils on October 5th at 6PM.
NOTES: Coach Adam Hunter is now 16-9-0 against Hutch all-time...Butler Soccer has won three straight games against the Blue Dragons...Butler Soccer has won 10 of the last 12 matches against Hutch
