The Butler women's soccer team opened its 2011 season with a 1-0 win over No. 3 ranked Iowa Western on Friday at home.
After a scoreless first half, including a coross headed over the goal in the opening minutes, Butler came out in the second half ready to put the game away. The Grizzlies only goal came mid way through the second half as Mari Ruvalcaba (Garden City, KS) found fellow freshman Alyssa Miller (Thorton, CO) at the top of the box. Miller beat the goal keeper to put the Grizzlies ahead in what would be the only goal of the match. During the tight game, Butler tallied 12 shots.
The offensive production was coupled with a stout defense. Lead by Freshamn goalkeeper Aisling Dyer (Bettystown Ire), the Grizzlies defense recorded 90 socreless minutes. Returning four starting defenders with the addition of several outstanding freshman, Butler's backline was solid. Dyers first clean sheet came after making 8 saves.
Butler ranked No. 11 nationally, faces another big test on Sunday when the Grizzlies take on No. 5 Laramie County (Wyo.) at the Butler soccer field.
