Grizzly Baseball Erupts Late to Run-Rule Coffeyville, 18–6

COFFEYVILLE, Kan. – The Butler Grizzlies picked up win number five on the season with a 18-6 run-rule victory over Coffeyville at Walter Johnson Park.
Butler saw their season end in the opening round of the Plains District Tournament at Walter Johnson Park a year ago. It was a different story this time around for the Grizzlies.
The Grizzlies defeated Coffeyville 18-6 in run-rule fashion on Tuesday afternoon, with the help of a nine-run inning in the seventh.
After putting up three runs in the top half of the first inning, Coffeyville responded in the bottom half of the inning with a three-run home run to tie the game at 3 a piece.
Coffeyville added two more runs in the second, and one more in the third to extend their lead to 6-3. The Grizzlies got the bats going in the fourth, putting up a five spot to take the lead back at 8-6. Designated hitter Tanay Vyas sent a ball over the right field wall for a two-out grand slam, giving the Grizzlies their 8-6 lead and never looked back.
Freshman and Oregon transfer Danny Wideman, fresh off his Jayhawk Conference Player of the Week honor, scored on a wild pitch to add onto the Grizzly lead at 9-6 in the top of the 6th.
The Grizzlies poured it on in the seventh, scoring nine runs in the inning, ultimately putting the game out of reach for Coffeyville. Freshman Vince Iseman came into pitch in the bottom half of the inning, where he saw two batters, striking out two to end the game in a run rule.
Right fielder Yusei Uzawa went a perfect 4-4 from the plate, including three runs and two RBIs. Shortstop Jackson Ellison went 3-5 and two RBIs. Vyas finished 3-5 with two runs and five RBIs and a grand slam.
The Grizzlies had seven different pitchers in seven innings. Connor Clark started on the mound, and Maddux Schrupp (W, 1-1) earned his first win of the season.
Next up: The Grizzlies begin Jayhawk Conference play on Thursday at McDonald Stadium to face the Garden City Broncbusters in a double-header. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
