EL DORADO, Kan. – The Butler men saw their six-game winning streak come to an end Saturday night with a 73-60 loss to first-place Seward County.
Butler falls to 22-7 overall and 10-5 in Jayhawk West play. The Grizzlies are fourth in the conference standings, a half-game behind Barton.
The Grizzlies started slowly offensively, not getting their first field goal until Jordan-Madrid Andrews scored with 16:23 left in the first half. Butler trailed 6-3 at that point. Butler would then go on to build a 15-9 lead after Bakari Triggs hit a 3-pointer with nine minutes left in the half.
Butler would still have a lead at 24-21, but Seward outscored the Grizzlies 10-3 to end the half, taking a 31-27 into halftime.
Seward led the entirety of the second half. The Grizzlies would get as close as three point at 57-54 with 5:30 to play after an offensive rebound and stick back by Eric Watson. Butler was still down just 61-57 after a 3-pointer by Trent Richardson with 2:40 to go, but Seward would pull away down the stretch. The 13-point deficit was the largest of the game.
Butler was led by Eric Watson with 10 points and nine rebounds. Sean Goodwin and Trent Richardson had nine points apiece and Bakari Triggs scored eight.
Kaheem Ransom scored 26 points to lead Seward County while Leslie Smith had 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Butler will finish the regular season on the road at Dodge City on Wednesday and will return home to host a first-round playoff game next Saturday.
