Mike Helmer - Athletic Director
The 2025-26 season will be Mike Helmer's 18th and final season in charge of Butler Women's Basketball. He has led the Grizzlies to an overall record of 406-156, including this season's 24-1 start. The 2025-26 year also marks Helmer's first year as the Athletic Director for Butler Athletics.
Before coming to Butler in 2008, Helmer began his coaching career at Wichita South High School leading them to unprecedented heights including a 6A runner-up finish. During his tenure at South High, Helmer coached Christine Elliott, who signed with Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. While at SMU, Elliott became a member of the 1,000 point club and amassed over 900 rebounds for her career.
Helmer also mentored Megan Lassley, who signed with Seward County out of high school and then went on to play at NCAA Division II powerhouse Washburn University.
Before Helmer began his high school coaching career, he spent eight years managing a personal training facility in Lawrence, Kansas.
After a stellar high school career at Marion High School, Helmer played collegiate hoops at Pratt Community College and then at Kansas Wesleyan University.
Michaela Serrioz - Associate Athletic Director/Head Compliance
The 2025-26 season marks Michaela Serrioz's fifth year on staff at Butler.
Serrioz was hired in 2021 as Athletics Secretary and was promoted to Associate Athletic Director in 2023.
She oversees eligibility and compliance, manages the facilities schedule/calendar, the day-to-day operations of the Butler Athletic Department along with assisting staff and coaches to better support their needs. She also assists in the management of the Butler Athletic social media outlets creating content and delivering strategic messaging to the over 11K followers.
Prior to Butler, Serrioz spent time at Highland Community College as an assistant volleyball coach as well as the athletic director's assistant. Michaela brings a wide variety of knowledge of the Jayhawk conference after playing volleyball two years as a student athlete at Highland Community College and now having worked as an administrator for over four years. She earned her bachelor's degree from Ottawa University in 2019 where she also finished out her playing career in volleyball. Michaela recently graduated with her masters in Sports Administration from Pittsburg State University in 2022. She is a native of Gardner, Kansas.
Garrett Hanks - Director of Sports Information & Operations
Garrett Hanks is in his first year as the Director of Sports Information & Operations in 2025-26.
In his role, Hanks manages all social media platforms for Butler athletics, manages the website, stats, and assists with game day operations. He previously served as an athletics assistant for the athletic department, where he assisted with compliance and game day operations.
Prior to working in the athletic department, Hanks worked with BCTV where he served as the Live Production and Streaming Media Coordinator, producing all live streams for Butler athletic events from 2022-2024.
Hanks also spent time working for the Wichita Wind Surge, the Double-A Affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, running camera and operating instant replay for the in-house video board and for MiLB TV from 2021-2024.
An El Dorado, Kansas native, Hanks most recently received his master's degree from Wichita State in 2025. Hanks received his bachelor's degree in sport management from Wichita State University in 2024, with also a minor in workforce leadership. He received his associate's degree in business administration and accounting from Butler Community College in 2022.
Abby Fawcett - Event Manager
Former Butler standout Abby Fawcett enters her 14th and final season as an assistant coach with the women's basketball program ahead of the 2025-26 season. Fawcett will step down from coaching after the conclusion of the 2025-26 campaign. In her day-to-day role, Fawcett serves as the Event Manager for the athletic department. Fawcett oversees all game day operations, concessions, staffing, and ticketing.
Since adding Fawcett to the coaching staff in 2011, the Grizzlies have not posted a losing record. Over those 14 seasons Fawcett has helped guide the Grizzlies to three national tournament appearances including five Jayhawk Conference regular season titles and two Region 6 Championships. Fawcett has also been integral in recruiting for the Grizzlies, helping pull three NJCAA All-Americans to Butler in her time with the Grizzlies.
Fawcett graduated from Wichita State University with a degree in General Studies with an emphasis in Communication in 2013.
Prior to coming to back to Butler, Fawcett finished her playing career at Friends University where she led her team to the NAIA national tournament and the sweet 16 for the first time in school history. Fawcett also ended her career at Friends University as an All-American.
Prior to Friends University, Fawcett began her collegiate playing career at Butler Community College where she graduated and enjoyed much success both on and off the court. When Fawcett ended her career at Butler, she amassed 991 points (second all-time) and 175 steals (second all-time) and holds school records in charges drawn (38) and free-throw percentage (80.5). For her efforts, Fawcett was a two-time All-Jayhawk West and All-Region VI selection (2010 and 2011), was invited to the NJCAA Top 40 All-Star event in 2010, and was named to the Academic All-Conference Team (2010-2011).
