Dustin Mettler begins his first season as head coach of Butler's cross country and track and field squads.
Mettler comes to Butler after spending three seasons as the top assistant coach at Meridan (Miss.) Community College. While at Meridan, Mettler's athletes broke six school records and recorded two individual national championships in the men's indoor 4x800-meter relay (2016 at Winston-Salem, N.C.; 2017 at Pittsburg; setting facility records at both sites).
Mettler began his coaching career at Butler before joining Meridan, as he helped coach the Grizzly women's cross country team to a Region VI title in the fall of 2014.
Mettler had a successful college career at Cowley County Community College, where he helped the Tigers win two straight Jayhawk Conference titles in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. Individually, Mettler won three Region VI titles in the 5,000m and the 3,000m. He had a personal record of 14:44 in the 5k as a sophomore.
After graduating from Cowley, Mettler transferred to the University of Arkansas-Little Rock, where he helped the Trojans' cross country squad win the Sun Belt championship. Mettler was a two-time recipient for the Sun Belt All-Conference team. Mettler has a school record in the 8k run (24:18), Mettler graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice.
Prior to Mettler’s college career, he went to Duncan (Okla.) High School, where he won state titles in the 800m, 1600m and 3,200m during his senior season.
Mettler is from Duncan, Oklahoma. He is a son of Sonya Hill and Kelly Mettler. He has two siblings, Taylor and Dylan Mettler.
